Just In: Never Before Seen Drawings by Paul T. Frankl
This remarkable collection of drawings comes from the family of a former employee of Frankl and has never before been seen on the secondary market.
Born in Vienna, Austria in 1886, Paul T. Frankl permanently moved to New York City in 1920 and was inspired by the architecture and forms of the thriving metropolis. Frankl’s design breakthrough came in 1926 with a series of bookcases modeled after skyscrapers.
In the 1930s, Frankl moved to Los Angeles where he would cater to the Hollywood elite, including Fred Astaire, Alfred Hitchcock, and Katherine Hepburn. During this period, Frankl’s aesthetic shifted slightly as it started to feature smooth, rounded forms.
This auction is an opportunity to acquire a group of exciting works by one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, whose legacy endures today particularly in Los Angeles, which he lovingly referred to as “heaven.”
