Peter’s Post-Auction Picks

October 13, 2016

Sometimes an exceptional piece slips through the cracks at auction. Usually this is because the auction is of such quality that even very special pieces can end up getting overlooked. I have picked out six examples from the Sunday, October 9, 2016 Modern Art & Design Auction, which deserve closer consideration. These exceptional pieces could have sold at any other LAMA auction and if they show up once more, they will likely get more attention.  These pieces are now available at a set price from LAMA and can be purchased outright, no bidding required. Here are my top fine art and design post-auction picks which are still available for sale:

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Lot 39, Tony Rosenthal, Harp Player, 1953
October 9, 2016 Modern Art & Design Auction
Available Now: $7,500 (price includes the buyer’s premium)

Harp Player is an exquisitely-crafted cut and welded bronze work by renowned American sculptor Tony Rosenthal, best known for his large-scale outdoor sculptures and public projects. Made in 1953, this work has a great provenance, featuring in Rosenthal’s solo exhibition at the Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach in 1958. Also, it can be seen on the cover of Arts & Architecture, November 1953.

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Lot 64, Frederick Hammersley, Twain Twin, #71975
October 9, 2016 Modern Art & Design Auction
Available Now: $56,250 (price includes the buyer’s premium)

Twain Twin, an iconic graphic painting by the esteemed American abstract painter Frederick Hammersley, remains available. Painted with oil on linen in 1975, this superlative work is presented in a unique artist’s frame. Although probably not the artist’s intent, I can’t help seeing the former World Trade Center’s twin towers in this painting as if one was laying down and looking straight up between the two.

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Lot 135, Vija Celmins, Alliance, 1983
October 9, 2016 Modern Art & Design Auction
Available Now: $8,750 (price includes the buyer’s premium)

Vija Celmins’s Alliance is also on offer. This Latvian-American artist is internationally acclaimed for her photo-realistic paintings and prints which capture natural environments and phenomena, such as starlit skies as can be seen here. This is the first work by this artist to go unsold on our auction block. Her works so seldomly surface, this is truly a rare second chance.

Lot 52, George Nelson, Sunflower Clock, Designed 1958-1959
October 9, 2016 Modern Art & Design Auction
Available Now: $3,125 (price includes the buyer’s premium)

A delightful accompaniment to any interior is George Nelson’s Sunflower Clock, which is also on offer. This elegant, modernist piece illustrates the sculptural potential of wood, and was created for Howard Miller Clock Co between 1958-59.

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Lot 295, Florence Knoll, Sofa, 1947
October 9, 2016 Modern Art & Design Auction
Available Now: $2,500 (price includes the buyer’s premium)

Finally there is a wonderful sofa designed by Florence Knoll in 1947. This settee is a classic piece by the American architect and furniture designer, who studied under Mies van der Rohe and Eliel Saarinen. Expertly restored recently, this example has another entire life ahead of it.

When it comes to design, condition is a key consideration and none of these pieces require any restoration, they simply need a good home. Each item is move-in ready and selling at very reasonable prices.  Any time that we have previously presented works by these six artists and designers, they have sold immediately – often at far higher prices than you see here, so dont miss an opportunity to purchase these high quality pieces, available now from LAMA while they last!
