Paul Kasper Sculptures: Planes in Space

June 27, 2016

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) is pleased to announce an exhibition and buying opportunity – Paul Kasper Sculptures: Planes in Space is the first-ever exhibition of a nearly half century of work by Paul C. Kasper, prolific sculptor, landscape architect, photographer, art collector, and patron of the arts.

The exhibit includes over 20 sculptures from Kasper’s estate and sheds light on the whimsical artistic sensibility by which he crafted a multiplicity of dynamic forms from a variety of metals and utilitarian parts. Kasper, who passed away in 2011, neither had professional representation during his lifetime, nor exhibited his work in a public setting. LAMA is pleased to represent the estate’s collection of sculptures from which a lifetime of dedicated craft can be gleaned.

Kasper described himself as a sculptor first and a landscape architect second. Born in Indiana, he moved to California after serving in World War II as an army medic, for which he earned a Purple Heart. Kasper first acquired a knowledge of metalworking in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression where he learned to weld. In the early 1950s, working with Hendrik Van Keppel and Taylor Green of Van Keppel-Green, he honed his skills. He and his wife, Sarah, settled into a home and studio in Whittier where they lived and worked over the next 60 years.
