Just In: Attention Pop Shoppers!

June 1, 2016

Los Angeles Modern Auctions is thrilled to present two works on paper from one of the great Pop Art installations of the Sixties, both available in our October 9, 2016 Auction of Modern Art & Design.

These two screenprints on paper bags—Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Can (Tomato) and Roy Lichtenstein’s Turkey Shopping Bag—were created for “The American Supermarket,” an exhibit organized by the artist Ben Birillo that opened in October 1964 at the Bianchini Gallery in New York.

For the show, the gallery on Manhattan’s Upper East Side was fitted out as a pastiche grand opening of a grocery store, offering such goods as plaster cakes and cookies by Claes Oldenburg, a Tom Wesselmann turkey, wax eggs by Robert Watts, and genuine Campbell’s soup cans signed by Warhol. The Lichtenstein and Warhol shopping bags were sold for $12 a pop, and more than fifty years later they still provide a fresh and piquant take on American consumerism. Talk about shelf life.
