Diebenkorn (1922–1993) is widely respected and admired for his use of luminous color, and the facility and flexibility of talent and temperament that made him a leader among both the West Coast abstract expressionists and the Bay Area Figurative School. He is most celebrated for his monumental Ocean Park series of abstracts, and their drama, references to the California land- and seascape and their bold and vivid greens, blues, and yellows. The refined High Green, Version II—with it striking colors and a spatial composition suggestive of an aerial view of the landscape—deserves consideration alongside the best of Diebenkorn’s magnificent body of work.
