Peter’s Post-Auction Picks: 5 Collector’s Items To Buy

March 6, 2015

What a success–LAMA’s March 1, 2015 Modern Art & Design Auction set new world records for several artists, with total auction sales realizing $4.1 million. But you can still get in on the action with these lots, highly collectible pieces, and the time to buy is now. Peter Loughrey, director of Modern Design & Fine art, picked five highlights to love–early, significant works by masterful artists and designers–Mike Kelley, Pablo Picasso, Claire Falkenstein, Edward Wormley, and Yvaral.

Lot 124
Mike Kelley
Test Room Containing Multiple Stimuli Known to Elicit Curiosity and Manipulatory Responses (2)
2001

Mike Kelley made an incredible impact on the conceptual art movement. Not only are his works arresting, stopping viewers in their tracks, they always have deeper and more layered meanings than initially apparent. This two-part lot has the kind of imagery that makes you wonder about the artist’s intent. Is the underlying aggression of the subject meant to be therapeutic? If so, what were the subject’s previous experiences and what happens next? Don’t miss out: this piece is emblematic of Kelley’s best work, but at, for him, an entry-level price. (Buy it now price [includes buyer’s premium]: $12,500)

Lot 143
Pablo Picasso
Untitled (Nature Morte á La Palette)

A documented work by the master’s own hand is always a great investment. This work, clearly identified in the Pablo Picasso catalogue raisonné of works from 1923–25 (by Christian Zervos), is a delightful example of the artist’s somewhat decorative style circa mid-1920s. You can clearly see the influence of his friend and sometimes artistic rival, Henri Matisse.  (Buy it now price [includes buyer’s premium]: $50,000)

Lot 257
Claire Falkenstein
Brooch
c. 1960

Claire Falkenstein’s brooches at their best emulate an artist’s fascination with the elemental line. Her ability to create endless variations out of the simplest materials, in this case brass wire, is unmatched. This example from the 1960s was purchased directly from the artist in her Venice, California, studio. A collectible item to wear: her sculpture and jewelry are in the permanent collections of institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. (Buy it now price [includes buyer’s premium]: $7,500)

Lot 295
Edward Wormley
Sheaf of Wheat table
Designed c. 1950

Wormley’s ability to infuse modern design with classical influence is legendary. Here the curvature of the table base is reminiscent of a “sheaf of wheat–” a decorative motif common in ancient designs. In this case Wormley has highly stylized the element in a masterful, mid-century modern way. (Buy it now price [includes buyer’s premium]: $3,125)

Lot 320
Yvaral
Mona Lisa Synthétisée
1985

The eternal muse, Mona Lisa, has been re-interpreted by artists many times over throughout the centuries. Here Yvaral (Jean-Pierre Vasarely) takes the classic image and pixelates it, bringing her into the contemporary digital age. An incredible painting for the price, this piece has staying power with its updated iconic image. (Buy it now price [includes buyer’s premium]: $18,750)
