Peter’s Auction Pick of the Day: Photography

October 9, 2014

Los Angeles Modern Auctions is pleased to celebrate the development and history of photography in its October 12, 2014 Modern Art & Design Auction with a range of photographic work from the 1920s to the 2000s, including pieces from Ansel Adams, André Kertész, Edward Weston, Diane Arbus, Robert Mapplethorpe, Sandy Skoglund, and James Casebere. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the Pictorialists created soft-focus, manipulated photographs that highlighted  the “painterly” aspects of the image, seeking to legitimize their work by aligning it with the preeminence of oil on canvas painting. Now, in the 21st century, photography has fully come into its own as a well-respected art form with its own unique art history. No more proof is needed than the highly attended Paris Photo LA, which will enter its third year at the New York Backlot at Paramount Studios in 2015. LAMA is thrilled to be a part of the city’s photographic ambition and appetite by presenting important artworks from the early days of photography to current, contemporary trends.

Self Portrait (1985), Robert Mapplethorpe, Modern Art & Design Auction, October 12, 2014

From Peter Loughrey, Director of Modern Design & Fine Art:

“I am always amazed at how a photographer can capture the essence of a person in a portrait. From the impeccably learned tone of Dr. Eloesser by Edward Weston to the soft vulnerability of Mapplethorpe’s Self Portrait, the medium doesn’t lie and we the viewer are invited to see the sitter’s world laid bare. Edward Curtis’ portraits of American Indians gives one the same insight into a time and place as Martin Schoeller’s portraits of Lance Armstrong and Max Roach exactly 100 years later. The process has improved dramatically in certain technical terms, but the artist’s ability to give us a window into the personality of the subject remains unchanged and is still the raison d’être of the medium.”
